Let me guide you
Yamina
Place des Jacobins
This square is one of the oldest in Lyon, dating from the sixteen century. Named after the religious order who had their coventry there, the square is now the quintessence of XIX Century French architecture, a subtle mix of neo byzantine and renaissance style. Locals love having their lunch break there either eating their lunches in one of the numerous benches or enjoying a glass of wine in one of the restaurant terrasses. It is the best way to enjoy this beautiful square made of white stones in which the sun reflects.
Gros Caillou Square
Located in La Croix Rousse, you can either take the funicular up the hill or work your way up if you feel energetic.
The view is worth every steps it took you to get there.
On a clear day you will see the alps as well as all the famous sight such the opera house and the Hotel de Ville.
La Cour des Voraces
You have probably heard about traboules, but if you have not, you are here for a treat. There are hidden passageways that cut across several streets depending on their length and we have more than 300 ones in Lyon. This one in particularly stunning because of these special set of stairs that make it look like a maze. It is open at every hours of the day which is not the case for other traboules in the city. You can walk all along down or up the hill of La Croix Rousse and enjoy the secret Lyon.
Rose Mir Garden
This fantastic garden is so se-cret that not many locals know about it. Inside a building on Grande Rue de la Croix Rousse, this garden was the crazy dream of Spanish refugee who spent the 20 last years of his life building an extraordinary place made out of shells and small stones. Tiny little place full of charm and wonders.
Canuts Painted Wall
Lyon is also famous for giant painted walls which are called ‘Trompe L’oeil’ meaning literally ‘fooling the eye’. If you have to see only one then the Canuts is the one. Another reason to go to La Croix Rousse and admire this colorful piece of art located outside by the street.
The Pink Tower
Just like the above, this tower is located in a traboule as well but this time in the old town, just by the Saône River. This sixteen century pink circular tower is as stunning in real life than in picture. Visiting this part of Lyon will make you fell like you have travel in the time machine and stopped in the middle age which is always a plus when you like adventures.
Beaux Arts Museum Garden
Only few people know but there is a little garden inside the Musee des Beaux art. Just by the Place des Terreaux, you can enter without paying a fee as it is before the ticket entrance of the museum. It is a lovely break away from the noise and concrete of the city. Here, you can enjoy the peace and quietness while admiring the statues, the faune and the flora. You will forget you are in the middle of the city center.
Musée des Confluence
For the post modern lovers, Confluence is the area you need to visit. Amongst many crazy looking buildings, the museum is definitely the cherry on the top. Here in Lyon we did not like it very much but it is an acquire taste and we are slowly changing our mind. The project was ambitious and it is now blending beautifully into the landscape. Talking about the landscape, you fill find yourself at the meeting of the two rivers in Lyon. The museum was built right at this spot. It is therefore very pleasant area to have a stroll around and admiring the view.
Jardin des Curiosité
Another stunning view surrounded by trees and grass. It is the ideal place for an improvised picnic. Located on the hill of St Just (Accessible with the funicular) this place is not well known so you will find yourself almost alone. A must visit in summer to cool down and get away from the city but also to enjoy the best sunset in Lyon.
Montée de la Grande Côte
This is the street for people who enjoy creativity in all its forms. Just by the school of Beaux Art, this street is full of street arts, including the famous David Bowie eyes. If you need some retail therapy but want something unique and handmade then you are in the right place! From ceramic shops to jewelry, everything is made by local artists who are passionate about their crafts. This is a steep walk and there are no other way to explore this street. But you can take as long as you need to suck up the atmosphere
